They’re more than just the one song that blew up on TikTok a few years ago. With everything I’ve heard from fans that went to their shows since the beginning to new listeners who have just gone to this most recent tour, there is one thing for certain: this band keeps getting better.
And there’s something magical about their live performances. Their harmonies are unlike anything I’ve heard. I was sucked into a distant world as they launched into the acapella intro of “Woman is a Tree” and then an extended version of “Gjuha.” Abigail Morris, Emily Roberts, Lizzie Mayland, and Aurora Nishevci uniquely carry themselves, but they never clash with one another. Their vocal inflections enhance one another in such a way that it makes their music feel like a choir is accompanying them. Their songs feel full and alive. I’m hoping to see them again once Georgia recovers to hear the full scope of their range.
It was interesting to see the control they had over their audience. In our digital world, every moment is a recordable moment. When they announced that their biggest song, “Nothing Matters,” was about to play, they asked their audience not to take their phone out. And they obliged. As I stood on the balcony, I didn’t see a single phone in the pit. Everyone enjoyed the moment – singing, laughing, taking it all in. Abigail ran across the edge of the crowd, engaging with the die-hard fans during the second chorus.
The whole show felt like that. I haven’t seen an audience so entrenched in a performance in a long time. I did appreciate The Last Dinner Party not having “Nothing Matters” as their encore and instead opting for two other singles.
The stage design was breathtaking. The simplistic drapery as the backdrop to the giant mobile of metal birds in the middle. There were three main platforms on the stage: two small steps on either side and a tiered stage in the background. It added texture to the order of the band. The lighting design also created some visually appealing depth and shadow at the most critical points of the show.
This tour was a beautiful display of artistry. I’m so excited that I finally saw this band live. The Last Dinner Party lived up to their hype. I can’t wait to see what they do during future tours.
