Released on June 26th, adoration is a beautiful composition of work by the New York City based artist. This EP is an exploration of love. More specifically, it maneuvers through black queer romance. In regard to adoration and his own introspection, J. Scott says that,
As a black, queer man from the south navigating in this time, I just needed to fall in love with myself again.
“not that kind of guy” is the perfect upbeat introduction to the EP with it’s late 80s early 90s Hip Hip/R&B sound. It’s a song about lust, of only wanting someone’s body and not their personality. As he says in the chorus, he’s not the kind of guy you would take to your mom’s house.
It contrasts with the more mellow second track, “edible” which has the same feeling as the come down right as the high sets in. From the lyrics to the instrumentals, this song is the epitome of seduction. “what were we thinking” is the come up. The guitar solo at the very beginning gives a great transition from the more sensual “edible”.
The last track of the EP, “this is the part”, gives adoration a good sense of finality. What stood out to me was the bridge. It didn’t break the rhythm of the song, it enhanced it. The bridge seeks to emphasize the wanting that J. Scott has for his love interest.
The entirety of adoration sounds like it could be part of a soundtrack of an early ‘90s romantic thriller. The alluring nature of this EP stems from the harmonies, lyricism and instrumentals, allowing the listener to truly feel like they’ve been taken into J. Scott’s world.
