As someone from the Detroit area–who has heard that famous “Detroit Basketball” chant numerous times–I knew I had to give this song a listen.
While I was disappointed the song did not sample that Detroit staple, I am already looking forward to what Bad Bad Hats has to offer. “Detroit Basketball” is the lead single off their upcoming album titled Walkman, which brings them to three collections. Set to release on September 17th, it will feature a total of ten tracks.
Bad Bad Hats is a Minneapolis-based trio that originally made their debut in 2015. One Reddit user on r/indieheads described the group as the “most underrated band in indie music”. Since I am a first-time listener of the group, this is nothing but motivation for me to stream their entire discography.
“Detroit Basketball” has a sweet melody with sour lyrics and a happy ending. From the very first line, you feel like you are part of the backstory and inspiration that wrote this song. The lead, Kerry Alexander (guitar/vocals) has a knack for storytelling in a way that is catchy and humorous – thus, bringing us this infectious single.
Bad Bad Hats will be going on tour this fall and I’m hoping to see them live in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Give these guys a listen and look out for their junior album, Walkman, out on September 17th.
