At 14, a lot of us are navigating High School, making friends, and wondering why life doesn’t look the way Disney movies made us think it would. Not Cloe Wilder! Cloe is a talented young superstar already making a name for herself in music. With an angelic voice she’s been training since age 11, she has released a few singles and even a cover of Last Christmas just in time for the holidays. Her most popular single, “Crying When I Shouldn’t”, has over 200,000 streams on Spotify. Cloe continues to make waves with her last single “Call Me If You Need Me”. We had the opportunity to ask Cloe a few questions about her career and new music!
Congrats on the new single! It looks like you’ve gotten quite a bit of positive reactions. How are you taking all of that? Was it exciting to finally put it out into the world?
Thank you!!! I’m so proud of this single and the attention it’s received. I was so excited to share it. This upcoming project has been so fun to tease.
It’s incredible that you’re putting out such great music at just 14! How has it been adjusting to a full time career at such a young age?
I transitioned to online school around the same time that my career started getting serious, so that eased my workload. It’s uncomfortable switching gears from music to school, but they’re both important, so I make it work.
What was the inspiration behind your song “Call me if you need me”?
This song reflects my maturity and growth that I owe to California. Even though I’m in Florida for about half of the time, I am now fully aware that I don’t belong there. I think it’s really cool that I already know where I wanna be. But, at the end of the day, I’m leaving, and that’s sad. I’ll always be there for people, but I can’t be there. So like, call me if you need me.
How did you get into songwriting? What does your typical songwriting process look like?
I was contacted by a producer when I was 11 and went to my first writing camp. I did two of those and that’s where I fell in love with writing. First, I like everyone in the room to do melody passes. We just mumble lyrics and melodies until we find an outline that we like. We write the rest from there 🙂
Who are some of your favorite artists/inspirations?
I started listening to Lana Del Rey when I was in first grade, which I think made a major contribution to my personality and music making.
What is your favorite instrument to play?
I’ve been playing the piano since I was four, but have recently started learning the guitar. I enjoy both of those 🙂
Who would be your dream collab?
I would love to work with FINNEAS, Lana, Phoebe Bridgers, Jesse Rutherford… there are so many!!
What’s one of the first things you want to do musically when the world opens back up?
I’m going on tour as soon as it’s safe!!
What has been your favorite part of your musical journey so far?
I’ve gotten to know myself so well through music. I’m really grateful for that.
This definitely isn’t the last we’ll see of Cloe Wilder! She has an upcoming EP “Teenage Lullabies” dropping on January 27th, 2021.
“It’s seven songs, all created in my bedroom and produced by Sam Nicolosi, written by myself, EZI, Merōn, and Jackie Young. I’ve never been more confident in a project. It’s basically me romanticizing my last couple of years of my life. I can hardly wait!!!,” says Cloe. And we can’t either!
Until then, we’ll just keep bumping her singles and having her cover of “Last Christmas” on repeat.
