At the beginning of the year, I had a chance to interview with Sleep House after the release of their single “Stephanie”. Since then the band has been busy working on their EP High Tide, performing on live streams, and strengthening their relationship as people and as a group. Read all about it below!
I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since the last time we spoke! How have you been?
We’ve been doing good! We just released our latest EP High Tide back in August and since then we’ve been enjoying the release, and working on a little project to go along with it.
In the past few months, how have you grown as a band?
We’ve really just solidified our brotherhood even further than any of us thought we could. We’ve been together for almost 5 years now and we started back when we were 14-15 years old so our shared bond has already been very tight. These past few months we really saw each other’s growth as musicians, writers, and producers.
I had a chance to listen to your recently released EP High Tide and loved it! I learned that this is the longest you’ve spent working on a project. Were there any hurdles during the creation process?
In many ways, it feels like we’ve been making this EP for the past 3 years since most of these songs were written years ago. “Clementine” was written back in 2017 under a different name, lyrics, etc. and “You’re Still My Favorite Thing” was an idea Nick G had been grinding out since our 2nd EP back in 2018. We all knew those songs had very strong elements, but at the same time we knew that they weren’t ready to be released yet. When it came time to planning out “High Tide”, we all knew this was the project that those songs would come to life on. We wanted to challenge ourselves and really go the extra mile with this EP, and those songs were the vessel for us to do just that.
I learned that “Clementine” was originally a love song for an ex. Was it weird working on this song since the relationship ended or had the break-up happen so long ago that the feelings are now completely detached from the track itself?
It definitely is strange to write about events that have happened in the past, especially when it’s something as personal and emotional as that. In a way, though, I found it a lot easier and almost cathartic to look back on those events again and to write about how I feel after all of this time. The song was originally a love song in it’s initial version, when it was called “Grace” but when we decided to revive the song and rework it, I figured it was time to update the lyrics and rewrite them as more of a reflection of that relationship rather than to leave it as it was. It happened a while ago but I think the whole song’s message is looking back and realizing how those dark events in your life can make your life so much better and allow you to realize the growth you receive from going through something that really takes a toll on you mentally.
How was your live show with Alt 104.5 Philly? Are there any plans for future livestreams?
It was a good time! We’ve been listening to them for such a long time so we’re extremely grateful that they invited us on. We don’t have any scheduled livestreams as of now, but we’re talking about maybe doing a few before the year ends.
Which songs have you been listening to on repeat recently?
I know we all have been loving the new The Neighbourhood album a lot. Definitely some Mac DeMarco, the Strokes and the new Omar Apollo album also has some really nice tracks on it.
From its creation to now, what is your favorite band memory?
I’d have to say our 2018 Spring Tour. We got to see so much, play in places we never thought we’d be able to see so soon, and it was just an amazing and very important experience for us as a band and just as people getting a small taste of the dream we all crave.
