YouTube has been recommending some amazing music to me in the last few months. The first artist I’ve come to love through their algorithm was the Long Beach-based trio Half Alive. I’ve been jamming out to their single “still alive” and their subsequent debut album since last summer. Since then I’ve added songs from Jungle, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and countless other amazing groups. There was one recommendation, in fact an entire playlist, that had recently caught my eye unlike any other.
Flash back to the beginning of March when this playlist filled with indie rock songs from Japan caught my eye. Each catchy song made me want to delve more into the world of Japanese indie music. Then, it got me thinking, what does indie music sound like in the rest of the world?
That’s when I decided to create this playlist filled with songs from Russia to China to Mexico. It was fun listening to how different cultures have shaped their indie sound. If you have any songs that you would like to see on this playlist (or possible a sequel playlist) leave them in the comments below!
