Daniel Seavey’s sold-out show at Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville was a night engulfed in energy from the moment kylekelly took the stage to Seavey leaving the stage.
Adorned in animal onesies and gingham, kylekelly and his band opened the set with high-energy single “HOW IS THIS GONNA END?”. The crowd came to life, “crashing out” with him and his band. His set included major hits, including Katy Perry’s “Hot and Cold”, Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me”, and a brief cover of 5 Seconds of Summer’s “She Looks So Perfect”. He closed his set with “my little heart <3”, a song written about a crush he had in recent years.
The show’s momentum continued as the second opener, sombr, played his set. Sombr’s set was full of small comedic bits in between each song and interacting with the crowd. His set included his entire discography and an unreleased single titled “i wish i knew how to quit you”. The crowd sang the loudest to “undressed” and “back to friends,” two songs that gained virality on TikTok a few weeks prior.
Daniel Seavey’s set was dynamic, with the many ebbs and flows of his high-energy pop songs and his ballads. He opened his set with “Waves”, a song with enticing, groovy guitar rhythms. The energy remained high until the middle of the set when Seavey performed “I Tried”. The crowd loudly sang the lyrics, “And I’m still in the band.” Daniel was caught off guard by the volume of the moment and later stated that it was probably the loudest he had heard it on tour.
After “I Tried”, the “looper segment” of the show occurred. During this segment, Daniel took song
requests from the audience and used his looper to perform them live. The songs covered were Troye Sivan’s “Rush” and Maroon 5’s “She Will Be Loved.”
This portion of the show was a defining characteristic of Daniel’s set. It made his performance and artistry stand out. It was nothing short of a privilege to watch him build these songs from the ground up with his instrumentation of piano, cello, drums, electric guitar, and acoustic guitar.
After the covers, the energy picked back up as he performed “Sleeping with the Lights On”, “Runaway”, and “Nothing Compares to You”. During these three songs, Daniel interacted with fans heavily. During the bridge of “Sleeping with the Lights On, he would come down to the barricade to sing with fans.
Throughout the show, all three acts interacted with the crowds; on stage, on the barricade, and on the balcony. The energy in the room was symbiotic as the fans and artists fed off of each other.
It was refreshing to see the acts go the extra mile to be attentive and inclusive to their audience. It’s a small detail often overlooked when planning for a tour, but these acts seem to have it down.
