Rarely does a song depicted the battle with mental health and encapsulate the feeling of loneliness as well as “Put Me Under” by the Southend-On-Sea trio In Earnest has.
When discussing the theme of the song, Sarah Holburn, who wrote it in her perspective, said that, “I suffer from chronic anxiety and depression, to the point where I can’t hold down jobs or be left alone for too long. In my loneliness I am awash with negative thoughts. The song is about feeling overcome by an invisible illness, but knowing it’s a lot easier to cope in the company of a dog.”
The entirety of the song, both lyrically and instrumental-wise, are beautifully composed. When first listening to “Put Me Under”, if you’re able, allow yourself to sit in a quiet room without distractions. Take in each lyrics, each tabbed note, and allow the round at the final part of the song to wash over you.
