Mauvey is a West African born, London based artist who isn’t trying to display a perfect image of himself; he’s just unapologetically Mauvey.
“He isn’t perfect, and he isn’t trying to be.”
Using his voice within the music industry, Mauvey aims to utilize his platform to uplift black voices and share their stories. His recent singles “Colourway” and “YEYEYEYEYE” released on Juneteenth (June 19th) celebrate black culture in a way that has barely been seen in the industry. His music video for “Colourway”, in collaboration with 37 other people, aims to celebrate individuality within the black community.
His mixtape Night Skin, is currently being released song by song over the next four months. Part one included “Goldie” and “Odyssey” released on June 5th, part two is set to release on July 17th. Mauvey says this about the mixtape:
“The Night Skin Mixtape tells stories that most people wouldn’t have cared enough about even a few months ago, which is SAD. Over time, our (Black people to be clear) requests to be seen as human (not superhuman or better than human, just equally as human as white people), turned into demands, then our demands turned into absolute non-negotiable action.”
Along with the releases from Night Skin, Mauvey is selling merchandise with 100% of the proceeds going towards grants for black creative artists.
“As an artist in an industry that doesn’t support uniqueness, I’ve never fit into a genre or the boxes they’d like to put me into. Like many, I’ve heard at least a thousand NO’s in my life. I think we’re desperate for someone who is willing to help and be a person who can say YES to someone like me. I’m assembling a team of people who will not only help select recipients for these grants, but crucially, will help keep the selection process transparent and above board.”
