Showcasing artists going against the norm

Jazmine Sullivan Wows Boston on Heaux Tales Tour

Grammy-award-winning R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan is a force to be reckoned with, from her stunning voice and captivating stage presence to her songwriting and storytelling prowess. After seeing Sullivan’s Tiny Desk concert, I became an instant fan and couldn’t wait for the opportunity to see her perform live. She’s an artist you just know will blow her already impressive recordings out of the water on stage.

As expected, Sullivan packed the House of Blues for her sold-out show in Boston. Her fans were ready (and dressed) for the well-earned night out she was prepared to serve up. Before I even exited my Uber, I could see the line extended over the bridge on Brookline Avenue, which I hadn’t seen done since December 2019.

“Bodies” set the stage for the evening, kicking off a setlist that favored Sullivan’s most recent project, Heaux Tales. Sullivan transitioned flawlessly into “Bust Your Windows,” her 2008 hit reimagined and bolstered by her backing band. These modern iterations of older songs were the caliber that makes you run back home to listen again with a newly tuned ear.

Standout moments of the set were whenever Sullivan took to her stool for her slower songs: letting her voice soar up into the mezzanine painted in cool blues for the mournful ballad, “Lost One,” and surrounded by her backup singers towards the end of the set for “BPW.” The screen visuals elevated the mood for each song, and Sullivan gave due spotlight to her impeccable band and singers during breaks.

For the encore, Sullivan encouraged the audience to “leave no pieces” and closed us out on a with Heaux Tales single, “Pick Up Your Feelings.” Like much of her set, Sullivan radiated confidence; always in her element, always having as much fun as the crowd.

The constant throughout the night, of course, was Sullivan’s transcendent voice. All elements combined, I can easily The Heaux Tales Tour was one of the best concerts I’ve seen since shows returned. Don’t delay in getting your ticket next time Sullivan tours.
