Showcasing artists going against the norm

The Icon That is JoJo Put Her All Into Her San Francisco Performance

I was talking to someone a few days after who referred to JoJo as a “Millennial icon.” While I’m on the cusp of Gen Z and Millennial, I remember this artist being a big part of my childhood media. Her songs constantly played on the radio, and the music video for “Too Little Too Late” was all over MTV. I would sing along to “Leave (Get Out)” not knowing what heartbreak was. Hearing these songs live was something I had dreamed of doing all those years ago.

She started her set at the Warfield with “off again,” the intro to her latest album NGL. She appeared from the darkness at the back of the stage, a dim spotlight outlining her features, before going into “Nobody.” As the lighting increased, the audience could see her beautiful silver outfit and iconic NGL belt buckle.

JoJo looked as incredible as she sounded. After hearing the 2018 re-recording of her debut album, I already knew that her voice had strengthened. But witnessing this live? This was on a whole other level. A shiver went up my spine with every note.

She performed three covers that night: her remix of “Marvin’s Room,” “Weak” by SWV, and “Lose Control” by Teddy Swims. She brought a fan from the crowd up to the stage to help her sing the first verse and chorus to “Weak.” After they completed the song, the fan said, “Now THIS is the big JoJo, not the little one (referring to Jojo Siwa)” which was met with cheers and laughter from the audience.

JoJo’s set was a great mix of new faves and older classics. Towards the end of the set, she performed the two songs we were all waiting for. Once the first guitar note of “Leave (Get Out) rung through the venue, the audience immediately jumped to their feet in excitement. They practically yelled along to “Too Little Too Late,” even filling in the backing vocals and ad-libs found throughout the original recording.

The artist ended the show with “Porcelain,” the fourth song on NGL. It was the perfect ending to an incredible night.
