Middle Kids are taking to the road in support of their sophomore album Today We’re The Greatest. For those residing in San Francisco, the group will be gracing The Independent stage on October 11th. Personally one of my favorite venues in the city, this intimate venue will truly help showcase the energy Middle Kids exhumes during their performances.
For those who have never watched Middle Kids live, here’s a look at their stellar performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! earlier this year:
Middle Kids is Hannah Joy, Tim Fitz and Harry Day. The trio had recorded Today We’re The Greatest in Fall 2019 with producer Lars Stalfors. From the marriage of Joy and Fitz to the heartbeat of their first child interwoven in their song “Run With You” – this album is a beautiful culmination of the lives of the band members. Here’s what Joy had to say about the meaning behind this collection of work:
“Historically I’ve written a lot of conceptual lyrics,” she says. “Stepping into this album, I wanted to allow myself to go and write and not feel like I had any barriers to do so. I’m quite a guarded person in a lot of ways, and I don’t want to reveal that much about myself in music. I’ve come to realize that having that barrier is a real problem for creativity. I felt like I put a ceiling on myself in terms of where I was allowing myself to go, digging deep, and that totally affects the music. I’m interested in finding the best music I can, but if I’m not willing to put skin in the game, then I’m not actually free.”
Joy’s push to break new boundaries in her lyricism and Fitz and Day’s instrumental flourishes are what helped bring this album to life.
“I want to make music that loves its listener. Music that makes people feel seen, seen in the tiny little places that hide away in their hearts. I want people to hear our music, and feel a sense of love. And when I say love, it can be challenging, intense and tough. But it’s in the guts.”
