Showcasing artists going against the norm

The Genius That Is Mobley, A Review Of The Multi-Talented Artist’s New EP

Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Mobley, has just released his highly anticipated EP, ‘Young & Dying in the Occident Supreme’. Releasing with Last Gang Records, this collection contains six tracks that immaculately showcase the one-man-band with his powerful, indie-pop sound. From keyboards, drums, and guitar, Mobley is a true Austin performer with a kinetic energy that makes him a unique individual. When you get a chance to see his live performances (after the pandemic, of course), you won’t be disappointed. He mixes theatrical lighting, video, and amazing energy.

Mobley wrote and recorded the majority of the guitar lines while in Thailand back in 2018. He writes all of his music, plays all the instruments, produces everything, makes the artwork, and produces his own music videos. He is the epitome of a multi-faceted artist. What’s most impressive is he builds his own instruments.

To drive his talent home, he directed a collaborative visual album called ‘A Home Unfamiliar’, an ambitious project that brings 30 musicians and filmmakers together from in and around Austin, TX. Just this past April, artists including Spoon, Shakey Graves, Wild Child, and acclaimed composer Graham Reynolds, came together to produce a music video. A neat thing about it is there was no direct communication between the artists in the creation of their work. They fed off each other’s energies and formed something beautiful. We won’t spoil too much of it, as we’ll let the video do the talking. But you’ll see different types of edits with various art styles. One minute you’re in the dark, then you’re in a luscious field, and the next minute you’re dancing in front of a green screen. Another moment, you’ll see stop motion photo clippings or nature, and then you’ll get liquid moving in acidic formation.

The music styles vary as well but come together as a solid unit of art. You may even notice his first two singles, “Nobody’s Favourite” and “James Crow,” comprise parts I and II of the four-part film. Their work aims to support pandemic relief efforts and stands as a document of this extraordinary moment in time. Music can truly unite and relieve us–watch it to find out! As you can see, there is only one Mobley and he is an artist always working on a new venture. Enjoy!
