Cornish singer/songwriter Polly Money dedicates her debut EP, Trip2020, to the tumultuous year of her twenties. Featuring six tracks, each navigates the listener through her years of sexuality, heartbreak, and existentialism. Growing up is never easy, we know this. And in this intimate compilation of eclectic pop songs, you may actually feel the same.
‘In The Dark’ starts off the EP, where her vocals resemble Tove Lo’s. The intro track is a great start and sets the tone for the rest of the songs. Her voice lends to the anthemic soundscape she provides. This song is about the realization of still wanting intimacy with your ex but not the relationship. ‘TWNTYS’ tells the tales of how she came to be a seasoned twenty-something year old. From relationships breaking down to people encounters, come along for this journey with her. It’s a smooth, soothing track to listen to. ‘Nova’ is a lighter track, that she hopes you will find some peace with. The electric guitar riffs resounding in the background showcase the sweet, supple melody.
‘Astrid’ explores her days of “earth-shattering sex”, and we’ve all been there. While listening to the lyrics, you’ll reminisce on those moments while bobbing your head to the pop beat. ‘Roommate’ is aptly named for those that have experienced roommates in their life. This is another light, joyous track that may make you feel bright inside while listening. ‘2AM’ closes out the EP and is a lonely lockdown song. Night owls can put this on and feel at ease. Her acoustic guitar melody gracefully puts your ears at peace.
If you needed a song for every moment of pivotal years in your twenties, this EP is it. Since 2020 started, times have changed and we have a new normal. Even Polly couldn’t have imagined writing about the toll of government-mandated quarantine and social distancing.
“It’s safe to say 2020 has come with highs and lows and as I sit here a seasoned twenty-something being asked what Trip2020 is about, it pretty much sums up the wild ride the last few years have been. Many times of elation and equal amounts of anxiety.”
