Imagine a cool end-of-summer evening. White sand tickles your bare toes, and the sun slowly creeps away, wishing you a good night, and leaving you with the moon, it’s reflection glittering on the calm ocean. That’s what listening to this song feels like: serene. “BS” has a different sound to his other works, but, does any Still Woozy track truly sound similar to one another?
Attending 1824’s virtual press conference with Still Woozy, I had a chance to learn more about the artist in a rather casual setting. Lounging in bed with one of the cutest dogs I’ve ever seen (named after my favorite character on Adventure Time, B-Mo), Sven discussed the importance of keeping both his audience and himself on their toes.
As listeners, we always gravitate towards artists who constantly break boundaries with their work and consistently release quality content. Each Still Woozy song cannot be compared to one another, and yet, as he says, they are each a piece of a bigger picture. His discography is like a video game: sonically, it’s like you’re exploring a different level; thematically, each song, or each level in this case, is taking us through the story. He’s created his own sound that no one can replicate. It’s even said during this press conference that his audience would immediately tell if someone else had produced his work as a result of him curating his own taste and signatures over the years. This collection has allowed for the unified whole his works create.
He’s constantly creating music that keeps his interests. Sven has so many influences that he can’t describe his own music. He says that he doesn’t want his audience to expect a certain sound from him, and he doesn’t want to feel trapped working with one genre. It’s this reason why, when describing his work, people commonly say that it just has that “Still Woozy sound” instead of listing genres that the artist’s work could possibly fall into.
The music listening experience has become ritualistic to many. You may want to get yourself in the right head space, your favorite headphones at the ready, to allow for the full experience of the new release. Producing his music himself, Sven loves adding small sounds in how tracks that are easily missed if you’re not listening closely. He says that without headphones (and he says that you can get the same experience listening in your car!), you’ll miss out on these Easter eggs. For a fun experience, listen to this 8D edit of “Goodie Bag”. It’ll take you to another dimension.
“BS” was officially released on all major streaming sites on Thursday, September 10th. If you haven’t listened to it yet, it’s definitely worth checking out. And if you have already, listen to it again and let us know how many signature sounds you can hear.
