Showcasing artists going against the norm

An Interview with Sun Room: Shabang Festival Edition

Shabang Festival’s 10 year anniversary comprised of some of my new favorite indie bands. Sun Room was one of these new discoveries. Comprised of Luke Asgian (lead vocals and guitar), Ashton Minnich (guitar), Max Pinamonti (bass), and Thomas Rhodes (drums), the SoCal based band made news fans of the festival’s audience.

It was a joy getting to know the band ahead of their late afternoon performance. I quickly sat down with Sun Room to discuss their upcoming single, their most recent tour, and their dream festival lineup. Read all about it below.

The last couple of months you guys have been busy touring around the US and also around Australia. First of all, how are y’all feeling? And also Max How are you feeling?

Luke Asgian: I feel more energetic than most times at the end of the tour because our touring has been like pretty split up where we get some time at home. We had a couple months off after Australia, which was nice. We got to get back in the studio. We just did the South for two weeks, super chill. It was really stressful for a little bit because Max broke his jaw a day before we were supposed to go and finish some shows in California. But now that we’re on the other side of it, we’re stoked.

What was your favorite moment from this recent tour?

Luke Asgian: Oh man, a lot.

Ashton Minnich: We had a day off and went to Disney World, not really related.

Luke Asgian: Thomas’, our drummer, dad works for Disney. We like got him for free. So yeah, that was fun.

Who would be the headliners of your dream festival?

Ashton Minnich: Strokes.

Max Pinamonti: Oasis and Blur.

Luke Asgian: Put them on at the same time, but on different stages. There’ll be a competition so you can get the most of it. Throw Jason Mraz in there. Why not? I would say Oasis, Blur, and Jason Mraz.

I’m excited to hear your upcoming single, “Hate It When You Call” on Friday, May 10 and also excited for your upcoming EP. What are some things that we can expect from both

Luke Asgian: Rocking and rolling,  good for guitars solos. Bongos for the first time ever. We had our biggest band argument ever about the bongos on this track. Everyone thinks they can play.

When you tour with this EP are you all going to take turns playing bongos on stage?

Luke Asgian: Once we get as big as we want to be, we’ll have the budget for a Bongo player. Cut all the drums and just only do bongos.

You’ve been a band for a short while but you’ve gained a lot of attention in that time. How does it feel getting that much success and popularity in such a short amount of time?

Luke Asgian: Lucky. We worked really hard, but we also lucked out. I feel like I’ve been very lucky my whole life and that transferred over to Sun Room. We just kept getting opportunities that fell into our laps easily. We definitely don’t take it for granted. There are a lot of really sick bands out there that don’t get the same opportunities that we’ve had so far.
