I recently had the opportunity of interviewing Vicky Casis, a New York based producer, about her new EP Baby Gurl, what inspired her to pursue music production, and more! Read more about her journey below.
For those who are just learning about you, could you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Vicky Casis and I’m a 27 year old Music Producer from Brooklyn, NY. I started playing drums at 5 years old then once I got to high school, around the age of 16 I got into music production and never stopped. I don’t really like to put my music in a box because I’m inspired by any genre but if I had to choose a style of music, it would be hip hop.
What attracted you to pursue music production?
What attracted me to pursue music production was honestly my brother Marcus. He got a music production software called Reason, at that time it was Reason 3 from our friend and Music Producer Peter Panic. I started messing around with the software and got hooked. Next thing I know I have beat tape cds with tons of beats.
How long did it take to create you first EP, Baby Gurl? Were there any bumps along the way?
It took about a month to create, but then I made adjustments and add ons. A bump along the way was coming to the realization that it’s complete. I would say it’s done and ready but then feel it was missing something. So once I felt the project was finally complete, it felt rewarding to be done.
Who was your favorite artist to collab with on the EP?
I honestly can’t choose one favorite artist. Everybody that contributed to this EP are my favs.
What would you say was your favorite track?
It’s funny because every time I listen to Baby Gurl, I have a new favorite song. But if I had to choose one, it would be Grit with Mike Larry Draw.
What’s your favorite thing about creating music?
My favorite thing about creating music is having the freedom to express myself.
How do you want people to feel when listening to your music?
I want people to feel what I feel. Whether it’s a chill song, uplifting song, etc I want people to feel that. For example, when I listen to Kid Cudi i always could feel and connect to his music even if I’m not going through what he writes about.
How do you feel when listening to your own music?
Oh I’m always hype when I listen to my stuff but then always feel I can do better.
What would you say the music scene is like in your area? Would you say that your style of music fits in or stands out among other performers?
The music scene in NY is great. There’s so much talent out here and it competitive. NY is the jungle though, we go very hard. I think my style fits in but it can also stand out at the same time.
What can we expect from you in the new year?
In 2020 you can expect more music and shows. I’m ready for 2020
