For those that want a fresh take on hip hop and fantasy, check out Australian rapper, songwriter, and artist, Zheani’s new track “Lava”. Paired with a dreamland music video on the beach, this song is her own representation of a fantasy world through states of zen, animated color, and a cure for loneliness. She’s introducing a new genre to the lineup and it’s something you should check out.
As the opening track to The Zheani Sparkes EP, the song is unique in sound and style. Simply put, we’re getting the first taste of “fairy-trap”, as art-pop and motifs of trap come through each verse. Accompanied by a groovy bass line, Zheani sprinkles auto tuned affirmative lyrics that exude tropical beach vibes. With wicked dance moves and a four-legged companion on the beach, dreams really can come true.
The mark of a true artist comes from their ability to make art. That is to say, Zheani raps with unfiltered and raw verses. This track represents happiness to her, an anthem we can all try to abide by during this trifling time. She says:
“At this point in my life I am happy in my heart but with the current state of the world, expressing it outwardly feels performative. For me it’s comical watching myself trying to express “happiness” as a convincing performance for the camera. Lava itself was very much “fake happiness until you make happiness” and I hope like a placebo it has that effect on others during a time it’s probably needed most.”
I think we could use a little of this inspiration as motivation to find comfort in what makes us happy. Her EP features an autobiographical perspective that focuses on dark childhood memories with a melodic trap drip. Don’t worry, with darkness comes light as you’ll also find positivity and escapism throughout this compilation. It consists of eight tracks that blend industrial and acoustic rhythms, with compelling lyrical content. Her realities shaped who she is today, and her creativeness of combining emo rap with trap metal make her a fierce force to be reckoned with.
