Showcasing artists going against the norm

August 1, 2022 Emily Mills

A Love Letter to the Queer Community

Jakk Fynn is a Los Angeles based musician looking to change the pop music landscape. Fynn, a
transmasculine artist, was tired of not seeing himself properly represented in his community. His newest single, “Meow,” is a love letter to the queer community and anyone struggling with mental health issues. The track opens with R&B beats and bubblegum-pop chords as Fynn begins to sing. He pines that sometimes the world feels like it’s crushing him, and it can seem like there’s no way out. However, he acknowledges that sometimes feeling this discomfort and pain lets you know you’re alive. These “carpe diem” vibes are wrapped in dreamy vocals and harmonies, while the chords add a bit of brightness that make the track feel hopeful. He comforts the listener with lyrics like “life’s too short, yeah/to sweat the small things,” and croons that he’s going to be ok because he owns his sound and sense of self.

Halfway through, Fynn begins a spoken section that continues over the chords and beat. He tells the listener because of his lived experience being born in the wrong body, he understands and sympathizes that some days are just too hard. But he also promises the world is filled with love and support, even when it everything feels dark. It’s inspirational, and embodies the message Fynn wanted to convey – struggling for your identity can be hard, but it’s so worth it to live as your truest self. Jakk Fynn is a trailblazer in the pop music scene, and he’s got a bright path ahead of him.
