The half indie, half electronic festival of your dreams had another successful weekend earlier this month. Shabang 2025 entered its 11-year run with beautiful weather, a stacked lineup, unique vendors, and some of the cutest merch I’ve seen at a festival.
It’s always a joy coming to San Luis Obispo for this festival. My second year in a row, and I’m still mesmerized by the novelty of it all. I got my first tooth gem at this festival, stopped by Wookplugs to get a pair of tarot earrings with hi-fidelity earbuds attached, shopped at the vintage stalls, and tried some delicious Paulaner Sunset soda. Paulaner Sunset, in partnership with @asm.analog on Instagram had the first festival pop-up film development station next to the Laguna Lake stage. The roll they developed for me came out beautifully.

Artistic indie highlights to the festival included Almost Monday, Garden Party, Mind’s Eye, Slow Pulp, Foxtide, and, of course, headliners Briston Maroney, Goth Babe, and Wallows. Mind’s Eye had the first mosh pit I’ve seen at this festival, though I wouldn’t necessarily categorize it as a “traditional” pit— moreover, a circle pit with polite pushing. It was honestly cute to witness.

On the electronic side, we had RaeCola, Leisan, Aluna, and headliners Omnom and Jungle doing a special DJ set. When Goth Babe’s set ended that Friday, his crowd excitedly ran to catch the beginning of Jungle’s act. This side of the festival was a non-stop party. Each DJ brought their unique flair to a city that was ready to dance the entire weekend.
The only downside I found to the festival this year was that there weren’t any non-male-fronted headliners. The non-male acts who performed this past weekend were incredibly talented and a joy to see live. I’m hoping that there is a diverse selection for next year.

I always have the best time at this event. If you need an intro to festival life, want a fun camping experience, or just want something new to attend, Shabang is just what you need. Learn more about the festival through their website, and be updated on when next year’s lineup drops by following their Instagram.
